Looking Back
It is that time of year, time to head north. The temperatures are falling and Mother
Nature has started to paint the landscape.

Lake Medora, Keweenaw Peninsula, MI
September 26, 2010 |
The title of our blog this year,” Thumbs Up”, tells a lot about where we are headed. Michigan is a beautiful state and few people know much about the Upper Peninsula (UP). Some maps of the United States have been published without the UP of Michigan on them. It is bordered by Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and the state of Wisconsin. It has hundreds of natural lakes, dozens of waterfalls, beautiful beaches, many lighthouses, and great food. People living in this area of the state, north of the Mackinaw Bridge, are referred to as “Yoopers”. People living south of the bridge are called “Trolls”.

The other part of our title, Thumbs, refers to the right side of the lower part of the state. Hold your left hand in front of you, fingers together, with the palm facing away from you and note the position of your thumb. This is the “Thumb” of Michigan. It is entirely bordered by Lake Huron. This area is sparsely populated, with small towns and amazing sunrises. Port Huron is located at the bottom of the thumb on the headwaters of the St Clair River which flows into Lake St Clair.
