The Cherry Republic
Another storm pushed through Michigan Sunday morning
bringing nearly two inches of rain in some areas.
Rain, Rain and More Rain |
We scrapped our trip to the Ludington pier lighthouse and
started north to our only other planned event of the day, the Cherry Republic
in Charlevoix, MI. By the time we got to Charlevoix the rain had stopped and a
cold 53 degree breeze had moved in. It was time to break out the jackets.
The Cherry Republic |
This store is a smaller version of the main store in Glen
Arbor, but they carry all of the Cherry Republic products, including their
wines.
The Goodies! |
The good thing about shopping in their stores instead of
ordering online is that you get to sample the products before you buy anything.
So, how many cherries and how much chocolate can two people eat? We will never
tell!
More Goodies! |
Petoskey was our destination today and we decided to tour
the downtown area before dinner. The area is small in size, about 10 square
blocks, but big on presentation. Every store has an occupant. Included is just
about everything you could want
including toys, clothing, hardware, crafts, wine, restaurants, antiques, art
and museums. Truly, a real downtown
shopping area!!
Petoskey, MI Arts Center |
As we were leaving the downtown area we ran into a very
interesting event taking place. A small
group of people was gathered around a bridge crossing Little Bear River which
flows into Lake Michigan. Upon further investigation, we discovered that they
were fishing for lake trout. The trout were running up the creek trying to jump
over a dam about 6-8 feet tall. Some people had been fishing all day trying to
catch just one of the large fish. They were not having any trouble hooking them;
the problem was getting them out of the water. The fish were so big they were
breaking the lines.
The Hunters |
One that was caught while we were there had several hooks in
its mouth. It was quite a spectacle…just like watching salmon without the
bears!!
The Hunted |
Today’s sign was seen in Traverse City, MI.
