The Three Cs
(Corn, Conservatory, Carousel)

This is the first trip we have made across northwest Ohio and upper Indiana. We thought that there would be a lot of good scenery. We did get the “a lot” part right…lots and lots of corn and soybeans. At one point we drove 80 miles on Ohio Route 33 without seeing a single restaurant, not even a McDonalds. Needless to say, lunch was about an hour late.

We passed through Xenia, OH around 10:30AM this morning (Thursday, 9/18). Some of you may never have heard about Xenia and the devastation it suffered from a F5 tornado in April 1974. The town of 25,000 was almost totally destroyed. After 40 years the earth appears to be healed. We are sure the residents still remember. You can read the full story on Google.

Our drive through rural Indiana did lead us to the beautiful town of Decatur. The original court house still stands and appears to have been totally restored. The streets are lined with beautiful buildings.

Our first planned stop of the day was the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne, IN. The Conservatory, which includes a desert garden, a tropical garden, and a showcase garden covers a large city block. The showcase garden is changed every quarter.

There are also outside gardens that offer a walking trail with benches and a few nosy chipmunks.

Our destination today brought us to Benton Harbor, MI. This is the starting point for our trip up the Lake Michigan coast.

After dinner we drove to the small town of St Joseph which sits right on Lake Michigan. One of the things we truly enjoy in our travels is finding carousels. St Joseph’s is the Silver Beach Carousel, and what a jewel! It is open year round and is housed in a large building along with other attractions for children of all ages.

The short walk to the beach gave us a great view the St Joseph Lighthouse.

The fun begins tomorrow (Friday, 9/19) as we head north.
