Lake Guardians
With storms in the forecast today, we were not sure how our
day would turn out. The rain was beating on the windows when we awoke but soon
subsided. It remained overcast; however, the storm brought an unexpected
discovery to our day.
When we arrived at our first stop, we were greeted by the
force of the storm being unleashed on Lake Michigan. We always try to walk to
the lighthouses for a close up view, but that would not happen today!

The Grand Haven Lighthouse was being hammered by the waves.
They were crashing over the breakwater.
Through the years, several people have been washed off of
the Grand Haven Pier. A monument stands at the entrance to the pier in their
memory, and to the honor of those who tried to rescue them.

Our next stop was in Muskegon, MI at the Coast Guard
Station. The Coast Guard controls access to the Muskegon Pier and Lighthouse.

There are two lighthouses, a breakwater light,
and the pier light. The breakwater light sits to the left of the pier light. In
Muskegon the lake was much calmer because it lies 18 miles farther north.

Our last stop today was at Little Sable in Mears, MI. Built
in 1874, the lighthouse is 108 feet tall and constructed of brick.

The light keeper’s
house and all the ancillary buildings have been razed. We were told as many as
500 people a day visit the light during the summer months.
